Immunogen: The original antibody was generated by immunizing Llama glama with West Nile Innovator + VEWT, an equine vaccine that includes killed WEEV. A phage display library was generated from the peripheral blood cells of the Llama and the specific antibody was isolated by panning this library against E3E2 protein of WEEV.

Specificity: This antibody binds the E3/E2 envelope protein of the Western equine encephalitis virus (WEEV), which is a mosquito-borne arbovirus (arthropod-borne virus) and the causative agent of western equine encephalitis (WEE). WEEV belongs to the genus Alphavirus in the family Togaviridae. The virus is transmitted to people and horses by bites from infected mosquitoes (Culex tarsalis and Aedes taeniorhynchus) and birds during wet, summer months. Infections of humans and horses can be fatal, and survivors often suffer permanent neurological sequelae. Most of the infections are subclinical, presenting as fever, chills, malaise, and myalgias, but some can progress to an acute inflammation of the meninges and brain parenchyma.

Application Notes: This antibody can be used for the detection of E3E2 protein of WEEV in an ELISA. The binding affinity of this antibody for WEEV E3E2 recombinant protein was determined by SPR. It was reported that this antibody binds E3E2 recombinant protein with a binding affinity of Kd= 8.5 nM (PMID: 31544894).
